Twenty-eight years ago today…

On Jan. 3, 1986, The Record reported that Republicans had taken control of the Bergen County freeholder board with a 7-2 majority after winning three seats in November.

Freeholder Charlotte Vandervalk was sworn in along with two new freeholders, Bergenfield Mayor Charles “Jim” O’Dowd and North Arlington Mayor Leonard Kaiser.

The new board appointed Fort Lee attorney Berek P. Don as county counsel, replacing Democrat Michael Dressler at the board’s reorganization meeting.

The Jan. 2 reorganization originally had been scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 5, but then county officials realized they needed to have the new board approved a temporary budget so that county workers could be paid on their normal payday, the Record reported.
